The Louisiana Budget Project’s report on school vouchers caused quite a stir this month, receiving attention from more than 20 media outlets around the state. Not everyone was happy with our recommendations, including the publisher of the Baton Rouge Business Report. LBP’s director, Jan Moller, responded to the criticism with a letter to the editor and an op-ed in The Political Desk.
LBP was cited in both The Advocate and The Times-Picayune for our statement urging the Legislature to evaluate corporate tax breaks based on merit and eliminate those that don’t produce results. Here is an excerpt from The Advocate:
The director of the Louisiana Budget Project, Jan Moller, said in a statement that the Legislature should evaluate corporate tax breaks based on merit.
“The report confirms that Louisiana’s tax code is riddled with costly loopholes benefitting a few big, profitable corporations at the expense of job-creating investments in education, transportation, public safety and other building blocks of a strong economy,” Moller said.
Throughout the week LBP staff had several speaking engagements. Jan Moller gave his “Louisiana Budget Basics” presentation to the Council of United Way Agencies in New Orleans and to the 2012 LANO Public Policy Institute. LBP policy analyst Tim Mathis also spoke at the Institute about predatory lending in Louisiana and shared his findings on how the payday loan industry exploits Louisiana’s working poor.
